Twenty-Three

Mia paused her hurried steps and looked at her reflection in the mirror. Her cheeks were still rosy from last night’s sinful sexfest. Her body tingled with satisfaction, and a dull ache hummed through her. Cole had scandalized her, and she’d loved every second of it. She hoped their connection last night would calm his possessiveness and controlling nature. She’d allowed him to have her in any way that satisfied his hunger but prayed it wouldn’t bleed over into their work environment. She needed to be independent.

“Agent Starr! We’re running late, move your ass!” Cole yelled from the other room.

She’d taken a speed shower and moved as fast as a human could. It’s not like she had vampire speed. Mia sighed and rounded the corner of the hallway, her concerns manifested as a ball of nerves in the pit of her stomach. Mr. Bossy-Control-Freak tapped his foot by the front door, tilting his wrist to look at his watch. “Let’s go. Your drink is on the counter.”

She drew her brows together as she grabbed a black container from the counter and headed toward him. He popped her ass as she passed. Part of her lit up, but the other part dreaded a work environment controlled by the man she loved.

“Head’s up.”

Her gaze tracked the keys flying toward her, and she reached out to catch them. “What’s this?”

“You’re driving.”

Lifting an eyebrow, Mia stared at the keys. “You’re letting me drive your Dodge?”

“You may be certified to protect and serve humans, but you still have a lot to learn about the paranormal world.” He tapped the roof of the car, “Lesson one, I don’t like to be late—ever.”

Mia rolled her eyes as he slid into the passenger seat and called her rookie. They simultaneously placed their cups into the middle holder, and Cole opened the tough box computer attached to the floorboard. He winked at her when she put the car in drive and pulled onto the main road. Mia glanced at him. His posture was relaxed, and he thumbed through a stack of papers in a manila envelope. He tapped a couple keys on the laptop, and she watched the vein in his hand jump from his movements. God he was gorgeous. Just looking at his fingers stroking the keys made her think of last night. She smiled when he it the “o” button, if he only knew—

“Eyes on the road, Agent Starr.”

Shit. Her spine shot into a straight line, “Sorry. I’m hungry.”

“Um, yes, I can feel that.” He pulled a piece of paper from the folder and glanced at the computer screen.

“No. Yes.” Her cheeks flushed. “I mean for food.”

“Sorry, I didn’t think that far ahead. I only made you coffee.”

“Do you mind if I stop? I’ll make it quick and go through a drive-thru.”

“Of course.” He kept his gaze focused on work, but grabbed her hand and kissed across her knuckles.

It only took minutes to order a chicken wrap, and she snaked the car through the parking lot to the main road.
